What Remains Protected (2026)
Watercolour made from ethically gathered earth pigments, seawater, rainwater and charcoal on paper.
Created using materials gathered from the Scottish landscape, this work incorporates earth pigments from Girvan Beach (teracotta brick fragment and sandstone), natural pigments from Stranraer sea front (clam and mussel shells), seawater, rainwater, wind, gravity, and temperature.
Tape was used to protect individual painted areas, creating distinct fields of colour that preserve the unique qualities of each natural pigment. These areas remained masked, wind controlled charcoal marks were drawn across the surface, allowing atmospheric forces to shape the work without obscuring the pigments beneath.
The resulting composition records an encounter between protection and exposure, control and chance, revealing both the individuality of the gathered earths and the environmental forces acting around them.
